Track 2: Undergraduate Summer Research Internship

Summer 2017 Internship

The ASA is looking for 3 undergraduate or community college students from underrepresented groups (see What is "Diversity") who have strong interests in science to participate in an 8-week paid summer research internship in an andrology laboratory in the United States.

The summer internship will take place from June 5 – July 28, 2017.

We have several locations:
- University of Pennsylvania Main Campus, Philadelphia PA (1 Internship)
- Population Council, New York NY (2 Internships)

Summer research interns will be under the direct supervision of a Trainee Mentor (senior graduate student or postdoctoral fellow who is advised by a faculty mentor). This cascading mentoring paradigm trains both the undergraduate and the Trainee Mentor in laboratory experimentation and research mentoring, respectively. In this case, the faculty mentor (laboratory head) will have research funding to support the research program involving the undergraduate.

Undergraduate summer researchers should expect to:
  • Learn important laboratory skills in a state-of-the-art research facility
  • Become an integral part of a research team
  • Take part in experimental design and execution
  • Attend and participate in laboratory research meetings
  • Read and evaluate scientific literature
  • Be mentored by a leading scientist and junior investigators
  • Gain valuable research experience not often available to undergraduates
  • Attend and present their work at the next annual ASA meeting in Portland, OR in April 20 – 24, 2018! (expenses paid)
  • Earn valuable research experience for future jobs and graduate school application

Calendar:
  • April 21, 2017: Deadline for Applications:
  • April 21, 2017: Deadline for Letter of Recommendation
  • May 21, 2017: Decisions to be announced
  • June 5, 2017: First day of 8-week summer research internship
  • July 28, 2017: Last day of 8-week summer research internship

Take part in this incredible opportunity and earn a biweekly stipend, totaling $3,000 and an additional allowance to cover your housing expenses! Research Interns will be responsible for finding their own housing.

George L. Gerton, PhD, Research Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Center for Research on Reproduction and Women's Health, Perelman School of Medicine, is the Program Director and mentor.

Patricia L. Morris, PhD, Senior Scientist & Director, Biomedical Research and Acting Executive Director, Research and Development Specialist at the Population Council is a program mentor.

Jamie Shuda, EdD, Director of Life Science Outreach for the Institute for Regenerative Medicine is the educational coordinator and will oversee the cascading mentoring program as part of this initiative.

Undergraduate students who are entering their Sophomore, Junior, or Senior Year should apply online here: Summer Research Application. All applicants for this program must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
